Layout is the whole job
A backsplash is a small area with a lot of edges. We plan where the pattern starts and stops before we cut, so full tiles sit where you look and cuts hide where you do not.

Questions
Where does the pattern start?
From the most visible point, usually centered on the range or the sink window, so cuts fall in the corners and behind the hood.
What about the outlets?
Outlet boxes get extenders so the covers sit flush on the tile. Cuts around them are tight, not caulked over.
